Moynihan on Team USA Prelim Roster

Amanda Stein wrote on the “Inside the Devils Blog” yesterday that prospect Patrick Moynihan has made the cut and “been named to USA Hockey’s World Junior Championship camp preliminary roster.”

He is one of 29 other players to be invited to the camp and is trying “for another chance to represent the United States on the world stage.” He is also “entering his second season at Providence College; its 2020-21 season was scheduled to begin on November 28, in a game against UMass Lowell, but the opener was postponed due to a Covid-19 test by a member of the program.”

The 2021 World Junior Championship begins on December 26 in Red Deer, Alberta and, according to Stein, this will be Moynihan’s third go-around with a USA Hockey international experience: he won a gold medal with Team USA at the U17 World Hockey Championship in 2018 and a bronze at the 2019 U18 World Juniors.

The center has just completed his freshman year with the Friars, scoring 13 goals and eights assists for 21 total points and eight penalty minutes over 34 games last year.

Stein noted that “the Millis, Massachusetts native participated earlier this year at the 2021 U.S. National Junior Team Evaluation Camp.”

In other Devils news, the club today announced their “Gift of Giving” campaign. The team and Prudential Center will combine with Goya and PSE&G to work with the Jersey Cares, Believe in Newark Foundation and Newark Working Kitchens.

The 2020 Holiday Drive is “a virtual fundraiser benefitting” those charities. As the press release put out by the team said: “The initiative’s beneficiaries will provide coats, toys and meals throughout the City of Newark.” The Gift of Giving campaign launched today (Giving Tuesday, December 1) at 9 AM ET on the Devils’ official site: NewJerseyDevils.com/GiftofGiving. It will come to a close on Monday, December 14 at 11:59 PM ET.

Goya will be partnering to donate 5,000 pounds of food to the Newark Working Kitchens initiative. Fans can participate at the above web address and “those who donate $35 or more will receive a choice between two exclusive New Jersey Devils themed t-shirts.”

The press release notes that “over the past two seasons, the New Jersey Devils and Prudential Center have donated more than 5,500 coats, 13.500 toys and 50,000 pounds or 40,000 meals to the Newark community.”

The proceeds from the two-week fundraiser will go to each charity equally, being split between the three groups.

Jersey Cares has run a coat drive for the last 24 years, mobilizing “the collection and distribution of thousands of ‘gently used’ winter coats to men, women, children, and infants in need.”

Newark Working Kitchens gets local restaurants to provide low-income seniors and families and people without homes with nutritious meals. Newark is one city hardest hit by COVID-19 and Newark Working Kitchens helps provide some relief.

The Believe in Newark Foundation, Inc. “serves as a vehicle to provide resources, technical assistance, and foster greater giving to support the nonprofit community and the residents of the City of Newark. Toys from the 2020 Gift of Giving Holiday Drive will be distributed to Newark residents at a December event in partnership with Mayor Ras J. Baraka and the City of Newark.”

Jake Reynolds, President of the Devils said: “On and off the ice, Newark is our home, and our commitment to community continues to be of the utmost importance. We realized how instrumental Devils’ fans have been in contributing to the Newark community throughout the years, and we wanted to keep the initiative alive through our online Gift of Giving 2020 Holiday Drive. The goal of this virtual fundraiser is to motivate others to support residents of Newark who are in need, and we are grateful to our partners at Goya and PSE&G for joining us in that continued mission.”

Rafael Toro, director of public relations at Goya said: “This holiday season is bittersweet for many families. We know that our community is struggling due to the pandemic, and the best thing we can do to help is to donate food. Thanks to the help of our partners and many organizations like Prudential Center, we are able to provide food for hundreds of families in New Jersey. By the end of 2020, Goya will have distributed 3.5 million pounds of food throughout the United States since the start of the pandemic.”

Frederick Daum, Executive Director Customer Operations at PSE&G added: “We are thrilled to kick off the Gift of Giving 2020 Holiday Drive alongside the New Jersey Devils and Prudential Center. The beneficiary organizations are beacons of hope in the community and we are proud to support them in their mission. This initiative is a meaningful way that fans can support vulnerable communities during this time.”
