Brodeur Puts Stamp on NHL Legacy

Martin Brodeur will be featured on a new stamp from Canada Post, one of six of the NHL’s greatest goaltenders to be honored.

Brodeur will be featured in the stamp set along with Lorne “Gump” Worsley, featured as a Montreal Canadien; Johnny Bower, in a Maple Leafs uniform; Tony Esposito of the Blackhawks; Bernie Parent of the Flyers and Ken Dryden of the Canadiens.

Brodeur is featured on the stamp along with a Devils logo and his name as well as the word “Canada” and a maple leaf.

All of the goalies featured on the stamps are considered innovators who “changed the way the game was played or perceived” noted the Devils’ press release. It noted that this helped make “them larger-than-life figures.”

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said that “(M)any people dream of playing in the NHL, but only a distinguished number of players achieve it, and an even smaller, esteemed group leave a timeless impression.” He also added that this was a “momentous occasion” for “the players, their loved ones, and the fans.”

All six of the goalies to appear on these stamps won a Stanley Cup and a Vezina Trophy at some point in their career. Brodeur, of course, has three Stanley Cups and four Vezina Trophies to go along with a Calder Memorial Trophy, five William M. Jennings Trophies and two Olympic gold medals in his hardware collection. He is also the only goalie in NHL history to post eight 40-win seasons and one of two to score a goal in both the regular season and the playoffs. He is the NHL’s all-time wins and shutouts leader and a nine-time NHL All-Star.

According to the press release, the 2015 “NHL Great Canadian Goalies” set is the third in a five-year collection of NHL stamps. These stamps will culminate with the NHL’s 100th anniversary in 2017.

The stamps are available for purchase at Canadapost.com.
