Free Agency 2018 Part 2

Some more Devils related moves on this July 1 free agent “frenzy.”

First forward Jimmy Hayes, who came in on a PTO during training camp last season for the Devils has signed with the Penguins for 1-year at $650,000.

Second, the Devils kind of went back to their roots with this one. They added defenseman John Ramage, son of former Colorado Rockies defenseman Rob, to a 1-year, two-way contract. The contract is worth $650,000 at the NHL level and $125,000 at the AHL level. It is guaranteed for $150,000 at the AHL level.

The 27-year old blueliner played last season in the AHL and spent time with three organizations: the Milwaukee Admirals, Tucson Roadrunners and Cleveland Monsters. He had four goals, 11 assists for 15 points and 65 penalty minutes in 66 games according to the Devils’ press release on him.

He is a 6-foot, 190-pound right-shot d-man who was drafted in the fourth round, 103rd overall in 2010 by the Flames.

His career AHL totals according to the press release are 310 games with 19 goals, 64 assists for 83 total points and 326 PIMs.

The Devils also inked Kurtis Gabriel to a 1-year, two-way contract worth $650,000 at the NHL level and $80,000 at the AHL level ($100,000 guaranteed according to the Devils’ press release). Gabriel, a forward, was in the Minnesota Wild organization the past five seasons.

The 25-year-old native of Newmarket, Ontario was the third round pick (81st overall) of the Wild in 2013. He split last season between the Iowa Wild of the AHL, where he played in 42 games, scoring three goals and five assists for eight points and 43 PIMs and Minnesota. At the NHL level, he played in 16 games with one assist and 39 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot, 4-inch 200 pounder has a career 190 AHL games with a total of 23 goals and 17 assists (40 points) and 345 PIMs. The Devils’ press release says he played junior hockey for four seasons with the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack.
