McLeod Re-Signed

The Devils announced today that they have re-signed center Michael McLeod. The 23-year-old is locked up with a two-year contract worth a team-friendly $1,950,000 (average annual value of $975,000. He will make $950,000 in 2021-22 and $1,000,000 in 2022-23.

He was a restricted free agent this summer.

McLeod just played in his third full NHL season (all with the Devils) notching career highs in goals (nine), assists (six) totaling 15 points over 52 games. This included his long-awaited first NHL goal (January 26, 2021 versus the Philadelphia Flyers). His three game winners was tied for third in the New Jersey team lead in that category. Additionally, he led the Devils with 42 penalty minutes including four fighting majors.

Six of his nine goals came “during the team’s last 27 games played” which was third on the Devils in that span.

The Mississauga, Ontario native was the Devils’ first-round pick in the 2016 Draft, 12th overall. The press release the Devils’ PR team put out mentioned that he was drafted out of the Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League where he played for four seasons. He was named captain of the Steelheads in his third year and captained them for his third and fourth year.

Following that, he played for the Binghamton Devils of the American Hockey League from 2017-18 to 2019-20. There, he accumulated 14 goals and 43 assists (57 points) over 108 games.

The press release makes mention of his international career, which included playing the 2017 and 2018 World Junior Championships. He won gold with Canada in 2018.
