NHL Names Jack Hughes Second Star of Week

The NHL named their Three Stars of the Week for the week ending January 2 today.

The first star was St. Louis Blues center Jordan Kyrou, third star was Florida Panthers left winger Jonathan Huberdeau.

The second star was Devils center Jack Hughes.

According to the press release put out by NHL Public Relations, Hughes’ three goals, five assists and eight points over the three games played by the Devils last week – all wins and all multi-point games for Hughes – led the NHL in that time.

Hughes had a goal, two assists and three points against the Buffalo Sabres on December 29, 2021; two goals, an assist and three points in the Devils’ 6-5 overtime win over the Edmonton Oilers on December 31, 2021 and two assists in the team’s OT win over the Washington Capitals yesterday.

The overtime goal that Hughes scored against the Oilers was his third career NHL OT goal. He had an assist on Nico Hischier’s OT goal in Washington.

The 20-year-old Hughes “paces New Jersey with 1.00 points per game this season, placing seventh on the team overall with 8-8-16 in 16 total appearances” according to the press release.

Devils writer Sam Kasan noted that in the game against the Oilers, Hughes scored the opening goal of the game (on the power play) for the Devils before ending the game with his OT winner. In the Caps game, he assisted on Yegor Sharangovich’s opening goal of the night and then was the primary assist on Hischier’s OT game winner as well.

Huberdeau led the NHL in assists last week with seven. That goes with his goal to total eight points over three games played by the Panthers.

Florida also won their three games last week.

Kyrou had three goals and four assists for seven points in two games played last week, which included two goals and two assists for four points in the 2022 Winter Classic – which is a record for an outdoor game. The Blues defeated the Minnesota Wild in the annual New Year’s Day outdoor game to take over first place in the Central Division.

Kyrou’s four points in the Blues’ Winter Classic 6-4 victory over the Wild set a record for points in an outdoor game and points in a period for an outdoor game.
