Prudential Center Unveils New Scoreboard

There will be a new treat for fans at the home opener this Saturday at Prudential Center. Besides the Devils debuts of players like Nico Hischier and Marcus Johansson, fans will get to see the “largest in-arena scoreboard in the world” unveiled at the game.

The new scoreboard, which will hang over center ice, weighs in at 88,401 pounds, is “9,584.9 square feet and almost four stories tall.” It “contains 29,610,024 SMD pixels.”

To look at pictures of it is to almost compare it to the one at AT&T Stadium in Texas where the Dallas Cowboys play… but this one is in a much smaller hockey arena!

The scoreboard was designed and manufactured by Trans-Lux of St. Louis, Missouri with structural engineering done by Murdoch Engineering in Howell, New Jersey. “The structural frame was fabricated in Burlington, New Jersey.”

The Devils press release boasts that at 9,594.9 square feet, the scoreboard is “3.67 times as large as the average square footage of a single-family home in the northeast US (2,613 sqaure feet).” It also says that at “29,610,024 SMD pixels, there are about 3 1/3 pixels per New Jersey resident in the new scoreboard.”

Some other facts about the new center-hung scoreboard are that “the video screens in the scoreboard are equivalent in square footage to 1,300 50-inch televisions” and “just one of the four main screens on the new Trans-Lux scoreboard is equivalent to nine main screens in Prudential Center’s previous scoreboard.”

The press release also includes that “at 88,401 pounds, the weight of the new scoreboard is equivalent to 2,562.35 Stanley Cups.”

The scoreboard is “nearly four stories tall” “from the bottom of the barge to the top of the main frame.” Its dimensions overall are 60′-4.8125″ wide by 38′-1.625″ high and the main displays are 49′-1.625″ wide by 27′-4.8124″ high.

Hugh Weber hopes that this new scoreboard will help “put Newark on the international map, where it belongs” and will help bring more shows and events to the building. He mentioned that this will help the fan experience at The Rock as well as make for better opportunities for sponsors.

JM Allain, President and CEO of Trans-Lux, mentioned that the scoreboard is “better-than high definition” and that Trans-Lux was able to take risks with Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment that resulted in “the largest digital scoreboard, not only in the NHL, but within any indoor arena anywhere in the world.” He went on to say that “videos are clearer, the colors are deeper and the video is four times more engaging.”

The scoreboad should be impressive and fans will get their first look at it on Saturday as the Devils host the Colorado Avalanche in their home and season opener at 2 PM at Prudential Center.
