Cammalleri Named NHL’s Third Star of Week, Ruutu Practices
Mike Cammalleri has been tearing it up lately and the NHL has taken notice. Each week, the league names it’s “Three Stars” (it also does so at the end of the month). This week’s stars include Ducks goalie John Gibson (named first star), Predators d-man Shea Weber (named second star) and the Devils’ Cammalleri (third star).
Cammalleri, in the week ending December 6 (of which this award covers), led the league with seven points, according to the Devils’ website. He had four goals and three assists. He also has registered three straight games with multiple points (three points against Carolina – two goals and one assist, two against the Flyers – a goal and an assist and two against Florida – a goal and an assist). This season, he has nine multi-point games and is fifth in the NHL in scoring (11 goals, 19 assists, 30 points).
According to the press release on the Devils’ website, Cammalleri has had three straight multi-point games two other times in his career: February 3-10, 2007 while with the Kings when he had three goals, five assists for eight points and February 24-March 1, 2009 while with the Flames when he had four goals and four assists for eight points.
The press release also notes that he is the fastest Devil to hit the 30 point plateau since 2009-10 when Zach Parise did it in 24 games. It has taken Cammalleri 27 games.
In other news, Tuomo Ruutu, who has been out since October 16 with a fractured foot, practiced with the team yesterday (December 6). He told MSG cameras that he is “almost ready to go” and that he is itching to get back “since day one.” Coach John Hynes said that he has been working at practice on further learning the system and will be back when he is ready. He said that Ruutu is putting in extra work and getting acclimated to his teammates.
He injured his foot in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Sharks at Prudential Center when he blocked a shot that he was not ready for.
Ruutu said that the team has not talked about getting him back in the lineup for Tuesday’s game at Toronto.
The Devils will head to Air Canada Centre firmly in the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, looking to further add to their points total. They are 14-10-3 with 31 points on the season.
