Blake Speers Notches Goal, Assist in Greyhounds’ Win; Assist in Loss

There is one other major Devils prospect playing in the OHL playoffs right now. That is right wing Blake Speers of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, who won the first game of their best-of-seven series with the Flint Firebirds last Thursday 5-2 at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Hayden Verbeek, the nephew of former Devil Pat Verbeek, opened the scoring for the Greyhounds at 10:34 of the first period. Jack Kopacka then doubled their lead about three minutes and twenty seconds later. Verbeek netted the game winner at 8:25 of the second period.

Speers’ points came in the third period when he assisted on Boris Katchouk’s insurance goal. He had the secondary assist while fellow Devils prospect Colton White had the primary at 7:29. Speers then added an empty net goal at 18:08 of the third period with an assist to Katchouk.

In game two, played Saturday, March 25 (also at the Soo), Speers added an assist as he got the secondary assist on Kopacka’s goal at 13:24 of the third period. The Greyhounds fell 6-3 in that game as Flint evened the series up at one game apiece.

The teams meet again on Monday at the Dort Federal Event Center in Flint, Michigan for game three.

Mississauga plays Ottawa in game two of their series later today and I will have the results of the Devils-Stars game later here as well.
