Devils Further Trim Down Their Roster

The Devils continue to march closer to the NHL regular season as yesterday they made eight cuts to their roster, getting down to 34 players remaining.

According to Sam Kasan of the Inside the Devils Blog on the Devils’ official website, forwards Graeme Clarke, Nolan Foote, Aarne Talvitie and Fabian Zetterlund in addition to defensemen Kevin Bahl and Reilly Walsh and goalie Nico Daws have all been assigned to the Utica Comets of the AHL as of yesterday afternoon.

AJ Greer was put on waivers and, should he clear by today, will also be assigned to Utica. No word at the moment if the forward was claimed by anyone.

The Devils will have a few more players to cut in order to get down to an NHL roster. Obviously, the cancelation of last night’s preseason game against the Islanders puts a bit of a monkey wrench into things. While the coaching staff can get a feel in practice and scrimmages how a player is performing, there is nothing like game action against NHL-caliber players.

It is not the end of the world, but I am sure the staff would have liked to have played the game last night.

We will have more information on the roster as it becomes available.

Devils Announce TV Schedule

As Devils hockey grows ever closer, we will want to know just where to watch them. Well, MSG has us covered, putting out the Devils’ TV schedule.

MSG+, as usual, will carry the bulk of the games. A handful will be on MSG+2, MSG and NBCSN. Pregames will start at 6:30 PM for the games televised at 7 PM and 12:30 PM for 1 PM start times. The games on NBCSN (Tuesday, February 9 versus Pittsburgh; Sunday, March 7 at Washington; Tuesday, March 23 at Philadelphia; and Sunday, March 29 at Boston) will have their standard pregame show – where they essentially ignore the Devils and focus on the usual.

Most of the start times for games are 7 PM or 1 PM with two exceptions: Saturday, February 20 when the Sabres visit is a 12:30 start as is the game on April 24 game (Saturday) at the Penguins. The NBCSN games start at 6 PM for the Penguins game, 5 PM for the Capitals game, 7 PM for the Flyers game and 5:30 PM for the Bruins game.

In other news, the Devils made some roster cuts. The team announced that Nick Merkley, Ben Street, Brandon Gignac, Colton White and Josh Jacobs were placed on waivers. They all cleared and will likely be assigned to AHL Binghamton.

Nate Schnarr, Brett Seney, Kevin Bahl, Nikita Okhotiuk, Reilly Walsh and Evan Cormier have been assigned to Binghamton (who will actually be playing at the Devils’ practice rink – the RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House – and will be using “the NHL Devils’ old game-day locker room” according to Amanda Stein.

One player who the Devils picked up on waivers was goaltender Eric Comrie from Winnipeg. With the retirement of Corey Crawford, the Devils needed another goalie with NHL experience. He has it, albeit very limited, making eight NHL appearances.

Comrie is 25-years-old, drafted in 2013 by the Jets, but played last season with the Red Wings (three games at the NHL level) and the Manitoba Moose (AHL affiliate of the Jets). His NHL credentials include a 2-5-0 record, while he has a .911 save percentage in 203 AHL games according to Chris Wescott.

In further news, Stein is reporting that Kyle Palmieri is okay. He left a scrimmage on Sunday, but returned to practice this morning.
